Candida Figueroa, daughter of Juana Reyes & Angel Figueroa, known affectionately as Carmela and Abuela, passed away on August 8, 2024, at the age of 85 in Staten Island, New York. Born on June 6, 1939, in Guayama, Puerto Rico, she brought joy into the lives of those around her throughout her years.
Carmela was a devout woman of faith whose affection for singing ‘coritos’ was known to all who loved her. She enjoyed attending the house of the Lord and got an opportunity to travel to Israel and Italy with her brothers and sisters in Christ. Her family will always remember her storytelling, which filled any home with laughter. Her spirit and devotion were evident in her actions and will live on through the legacy of generosity that was demonstrated through Carmela’s joy of sharing food with her neighbors. Her love and hope in Jesus will remain instilled in her loved ones and to all those who had the privilege of her presence.
She leaves behind a loving family, including her daughters Magdalena Berlingieri and Sylvia Aviles, along with their spouses. Carmela was a cherished grandmother to Junior, John, Jay, Cito, Sarah, Bebo, Alex, Lucas, and a proud great-grandmother to Ariana, Christopher, Arai and Toni. Carmela was preceded in death by her son Tony and her sister, Lydia and brother, Emiliano (Chan). She will be deeply missed.

Nacida el 6 de junio de 1939 en Guayama, Puerto Rico, trajo alegría a la vida de quienes la rodeaban a lo largo de sus años.
Carmela era una mujer devota de fe y todos los que la querían, sabian cuanto ella amaba cantar coritos. Le gustaba atender la casa del Señor y tuvo la oportunidad de viajar a Israel e Italia con sus hermanos y hermanas en Cristo. Su familia siempre recordará sus cuentos, que llenaban de risas cualquier hogar. Su espíritu y devoción fueron evidentes en sus acciones y vivirán a través de su generosidad que se demostraba cuando Carmela compartia comida con sus vecinos. Su amor y esperanza en Jesús permanecerán inculcados a sus seres queridos y a todos aquellos que tuvieron el privilegio de su presencia.
